What is the level of difficulty involved in upgrading my 640D?

Recommended Posts

I have had a 640D coupe for a duration of 3 years, and I have developed a strong affection for it. It seems to have a premium specification, including a heads-up display and a Harman Kardon sound system, among other features.

As my family is expanding, I find it impractical to continue using a 2-door vehicle. Therefore, I have decided to upgrade to a 4-door version. The car I am considering has low mileage and is being offered at a favourable price. I took it for a test drive yesterday and everything seems to be in fine condition.

However, it lacks several high-end features such as the HK sound system and the HUD. I have a strong preference for the HUD (Heads-Up Display) and I am considering getting the new Gran Coupe. I would want to know whether it is feasible to have the HUD installed in this car, and if so, will it require significant effort and expense?

Furthermore, if I were to express a desire to enhance the audio system, would the same inquiry apply?

Any guidance or recommendations are appreciated - thank you!

I would imagine that installing the HUD would be a substantial and costly undertaking, as you have said. It would likely need the installation of a new dashboard to fit the HUD, as well as a new windscreen due to the differing glass requirements. Additionally, there would be a need for certain components and coding to complete the installation. Enhancing the sound system may not be as substantial, but it is likely to be rather costly. It would include acquiring both the head unit and all the speakers. Additionally, the HK setup may require the installation of supplementary speakers. There is a high probability that there will be a software update or code related to it.

If I had a strong desire for such characteristics, I would continue my search.

Installing the HUD involves removing the dashboard and replacing it with a new one, as well as replacing the windscreen, as previously mentioned. One option is to get the bits used and then they will need programming to be compatible with the automobile. Overall, it is a substantial task. In my opinion, the most optimal course of action, as suggested by others, is to continue looking until you discover a suitable option that meets your specific requirements.
Thank you

When importers bring in Japanese cars, they typically do not modify the dash or clocks. Instead, they install aftermarket heads-up displays (HUDs). I suggest looking into a similar option. Personally, I have a HUD on my M4, and while I could manage without it, I find that when it is in "M" display mode, resembling a jet fighter layout, it can be distracting when making right turns, especially in tight corners or on streets. It creates the illusion that there is an obstruction present.Although it may seem unusual, it is visually attention-grabbing. However, it seems typical when seen under regular circumstances.
