Needsnewtyres2
Greetings, everyone! I am a newcomer seeking guidance. I have been researching but have not seen any information similar to the issue/noise I am having with my vehicle, so I thought I would seek out to see if anybody can assist me in resolving this matter. I have had my 2007 E320 sport sedan for about one year, and I think the gearbox code is 722.9. I have recently observed an unusual metallic sound emanating from the vicinity of the torque converter. Here is the current situation: Upon initiating the engine in a cold state, the noise is hardly perceptible. The noise diminishes when I shift the vehicle into drive when the engine is cold. When the engine reaches operating temperature, the noise intensifies when in neutral or park. I have replaced the gearbox oil and filter according to manufacturer specifications, but it did not resolve the issue. The vehicle transitions smoothly when warm; however, I have observed that when cold and downshifting from second to first gear, the experience is rather jarring (but devoid of clunking). The gearbox seems to function OK; nonetheless, the noise is causing me some concern. Has anybody had a similar situation or have any recommendations on the potential causes? I have also included an audio clip of the vehicle in neutral, transitioning to drive, and then reverting to neutral, if that is of assistance. Thank you in advance for any assistance! SD1too
Inspect the engine mounts and gearbox mount, since their age may contribute to the noise; this is how I resolved the issue with my W211 E280.
BENZE220AMG
My 2011 E350CDI with a 7G gearbox has a little roughness while shifting from 2nd to 1st gear when cold. Replacing the engine mounts and gearbox mount has, if anything, intensified that specific characteristic. However, all other shifting characteristics have been smoother and quieter after the mounts were altered.
Needsnewtyres2
Thank you for the information; engine mounts are on my agenda, and I am also experiencing an unusual droning sound while turning left at high speed. I will implement this adjustment and provide a report thereafter.
stevenkeyte
Similarly, my 2013 C Class exhibited some clumsiness when chilly when approaching intersections or roundabouts. It becomes sufficiently smooth when heated. The roughness during the low gear shift mostly vanished when sport mode was activated before to departure. Flexfer
Similarly, my 2013 W204 had a clunky upshift when cold, which is a known trait. The ATF has been modified and the TCU software has been upgraded, among other changes. Consequently, 2013 vehicles will include the subsequent G7+ variation, leaving uncertainty over the impact on the OP's earlier 7G model. BENZE220AMG
Indeed, mine is a 7G+, however it was produced within a brief period prior to the introduction of start-stop technology. It is regrettable!
neilrr010
Engine and gearbox mounts? My 2005 CLK (272) is entirely original at 92,000 miles and operates really smoothly. New electrical plate installed years before. When was the most recent oil and filter service performed?
BENZE220AMG
The original post states that replacing the ATF fluid and filter has not ameliorated the condition. The date of the change was not specified; however, given that it was executed in an attempt to resolve the problem, I infer that it occurred at the recent conclusion of the gearbox oil and filter service period. Nonetheless, Op, might it be that the fill level is inaccurate? This is not a critique; I am only attempting to identify the straightforward and cost-effective solutions first. Needsnewtyres2
No concerns, none perceived 😉 Approximately 7 litres were used without drainage.

Needsnewtyres2
Upon reporting, I have successfully replaced the engine mounts, and the improvement is remarkable! They were utterly exhausted and fragmented within. Thank you for your assistance with this!
