Which suspension option is better: Bilstein B6 or B8?

Recommended Posts

Seeking input from those with prior experience with Bilstein shock absorbers. I get that the B6 and B8 have identical valve configurations, however the B8 model is of shorter length.

I own a 2013 C220 S204 equipped with the original factory-installed lowered suspension. I am interested in replacing the shocks and springs. I want to maintain the current height of the vehicle and I am uncertain if I should choose for B6 or B8 shocks. I have sent an email to Bilstein, but I have not received a response. Is the B8, which is shorter, too short to be compatible with factory lowered springs?

What are your future plans for your diesel automobile with four cylinders? Are you referring to track days? Bilstein shocks are of excellent quality and quite valuable if you want to use their features. I have just replaced the suspension on all four corners of my C55 AMG (S203) with Koni gas struts/shocks, along with MB supplied Eibac AMG specific front springs and Sachs rear springs. The outcome is really satisfactory for everyday driving on UK roads.

It is evident that you have thoroughly researched the topic and it is apparent that you understand that shock length, unless it is very long or short, does not have an impact on ride height. The primary factor that affects ride height is the springs. It seems that you are inquiring about determining the appropriate shock length for the springs you are planning to replace. Is that correct?

Directly from the source - What distinguishes Bilstein B6 from Bilstein B8?

The B8 suspension system is specifically engineered for use with lowering springs or cars that come equipped with a factory-installed lowered suspension, such as Mercedes AMG models.

The B8 is suitable for your requirements. The B6 suspension system is used when the vehicle has been lowered using Eibach or H&R springs, among others.
These shocks provide excellent control and a smooth ride. It is a single, abrupt motion, resulting in essentially minimal suspension or buoyancy.

Thank you for the responses.

While I am not seeking track-level performance, I do like pushing the limits on winding roads. As far as I know, my suspension has not been modified since it was first installed 140,000 miles ago. Additionally, there is a broken spring on the front, therefore I will replace all four springs with standard parts.

The original equipment manufacturer (OEM) damper for the S204 Mercedes is manufactured by Bilstein. Therefore, it is recommended to purchase the Bilstein damper. It is important to note that this is not just an ordinary Bilstein B4 damper, but rather a B4 DampMatic® damper.

There is no need for B6 or B8.
