nicebubby8
Hi All, I've chosen to change the oil in the gearbox of my 2013 R56 JCW, which I love. The "clock" read 40,000 miles. What is the best oil to use in a gearbox? I know that it's 75w80, but is there a name that "stands out"? Cheers, guys.
KOOLCAR
I used GL4-specification Comma Fully Synthetic MVMTF 75W80 motor oil. As far as I could tell, GL-4 is the BMW-specified oil, despite the fact that most places sell GL5 instead. Surely others will tell you I'm incorrect, but so what! migueldosantos77
GL5 contains more aggressive additives and will cause internal injury to the packaging if utilised. I typically use Castrol and have found it to be a respectable oil.

My go-to advice is always to stick with the original gearbox fluid. There is no need to subject your vehicle or gearbox to experimental fluids. QuirkyPixel
Hi I have changed the gearbox oil twice with Castrol Syntrans 75W-90 API GL-4 on a 200k Km Cooper-D. Excellent operation
nicebubby8
Thank you to everyone who gave me advise. I bought authentic BMW/MINI transmission oil from my local dealer after considerable thought. At a reasonable £20 for a 1 litre bottle.
MidnightMarauder
You must now figure out a way to insert it, LOL.
migueldosantos77
If it helps, I generally fill the gearbox/diffs/transfer cases using a hand pump.
