What was the determining factor for the inclusion of a mesh grille on the first generation?

Recommended Posts

What is the reason for the presence of mesh grilles on Gen 1 cars? Are all of these mesh grilles aftermarket?
While personal choice may vary, it is worth considering the prevailing opinion: is mesh generally chosen for its aesthetic appeal, or is the plastic slat form more often favoured?
Thank you.

Audi did not produce a mesh RS-style grille for the first generation. There are several aftermarket models available, all of them are manufactured in China.

Nonetheless, we manufacture an RS-style mesh grille using the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) Gen 1 grilles. Many buyers on this forum have purchased hundreds of items. The quality of this version is far superior than the Chinese one, however it comes at a higher price.

Take a moment to observe a factory grill and admire its horizontal lines, particularly the striking boldness of the horizontal bumper. Without it, the anterior portion of the vehicle seems fragmented.

While I can see the attractiveness of the mesh grille, I personally like the traditional aesthetic. I was dissatisfied with the unimpressive licence plate holder positioned in the centre, hence I chose to get a Euro grille from R8-Stuff. My vehicle is black, and the silver grille in the centre of the black colour scheme looks aesthetically pleasing.
